Movie Motifs: Whats in a Scarf?

When Hollywood diva Angelina Jolie started wearing a long scarf on all her private trips, critics said she was trying to hide her thin frame. But it sure sparked a craze for the scarf among the young and old alike. The scarf motif has been used even in movies and here are some films you cannot forget if you’re a movie buff and scarf lover!

Sabrina – After this movie every single woman on both sides of the Atlantic was ready to die for a striped short neck scarf. Audrey Hepburn almost started a revolution in this movie of the 1960s. Her intense charm and onscreen pertness would never have reached the level of mass-hysterical that it did if she had not worn that scarf! Hepburn also starred in ‘Purple Scarf’ wearing a plain head scarf in purple (what else?) and her trademark goggles.

The Indian Scarf – A popular movie that was originally made in German as Das Indische Tuch was a European hit. It was a murder mystery that revolved around two people who visit an island belonging to their benefactor. The two inheritors soon find themselves being hunted by a mystery stranger out to strangle them with an Indian scarf! Needless to add, the movie made scarves popular though not as murder weapons! Directed by Alfred Vohrer the movie starred Joachim Fuchsberger.

Harry Potter scarves – Of all Harry Potter accessories, the licensed scarves worn by Hermione, Harry Potter and other characters in the movie series are so popular that people want to knit one themselves. The official Harry Potter scarves come with the Hogwarts crest and are in Gryffindor colors – gold and scarlet. These scarves are long and have become a craze among youngsters.

Scarves worn by characters in Harry Potter movies have evolved too. The Prisoner of Azkaban Hogwarts scarves have a dark fringe and stripes with a dark base and light stripped design. Hermione’s scarf is extremely long. Since she doesn’t knot them, it reaches all the way to her knees. If you want a Hogwarts scarf, it will have 19 alternating stripes with 9 light ones.

The motif depends on the house the scarf represents. The Slytherin colors are silver and dark green, Ravenclaw are bronze and blue in the books but silver and medium blue in the movies while those of Hufflepuff are yellow and black.

A Christmas Carol – We had to mention this upcoming movie because it’s going to be the 19th adaptation of Charles Dickens’ novel of the same name. A Christmas Carol – releasing November, 2009, by Robert Zemeckis stars Jim Carrey as the popular Dickens character Ebenezer Scrooge. The poster of the film has Carrey donning a fabulous knitted red scarf that has been digitally mastered!

Not just as film motifs, Hollywood has used scarves for charity purposes as well. Many celebrities are linked with breast cancer aid and other charities that make scarves to raise funds. Most celebrities regularly use scarves as personal accessories wrapped in creative styles. Speaking of scarves, how can you not mention Grace Kelly, Lindsay Lohan, Madonna, Julia Roberts – to name a few – in the same breath!
